About this deal

The Superbright version also has the added benefit of keeping you visible at night, so is a great option for commuters. Any data that needs further explanation is annotated with * and further details are provided at the foot of the table. But my main point stands: if a 10 mm chain is only getting a Bronze rating, there’s something wrong with it.

So if you're high risk, which should it be: Gold or Diamond? Well the truth is: it's a bit complicated at the moment! Be aware though, registering directly through OnGuard is for US customers only! How secure is the OnGuard 8020 Mastiff?

The 1060’s 10mm (9.9mm) hexagonal chain links will protect your bike from small to medium-sized bolt cutters, a standard weapon of choice for bike thieves.

The 8020 weighs 6.28 lb (2.85 kg). That’s the equivalent of 7.5 cans of coke. So while it’s perfectly possible to carry this chain around every day, it is very heavy. And you’re really going to notice that weight whether you sling it over your shoulders or wrap it round your frame! Is the OnGuard 8020 Mastiff easy to use? I think the Smash Labs review was just a write up of Hal Ruzal video. I could be wrong though, I can’t remember it that well. It’s such a beefy chain that most thieves aren’t even going to try to mess with it.

If you only use it to secure your frame (tightly wrapped around your top tube), you can keep the chain shorter (and lighter). And even more significantly: it will be further from the ground so it will be much harder for a thief to crop it.

You'll have to come with a different way to protect your wheels, but there's load of options and at least your bike will be safe! No surprises so far. We know a big chain like this is going to be heavy, but fairlystraightforward to use. Andwe’d also expect itto also provide a pretty high level of protection. Unfortunately it doesn’t. Secondly, because you can wrap them around your seat post or top bar, they can be easier to transport. They’re made from a series of hardened steel chain links, and the chain is usually covered in a protective sleeve made from nylon or kevlar to prevent cutting. This sleeve also keeps the chain clean and prevents it from scratching or damaging your bike. They both come in a variety of lengths. But I recommend you go for the shorter chains and wrap them tightly around your top tube rather than using longer chains to secure your wheels as well.

That said, thieves are unlikely to carry the largest 36″ or 42″ bolt cutters on the street, as they’re next to impossible to conceal. So get the shortest length that you need to secure your bike. You can use a length of rope to work that out if necessary. We would always recommend shopping around as you can usually level up on the Sold Secure rating for similar pricing if not a bit more, for added protection.

But I don’t want to pay this much money and carry this much weight around, in return for psychological protection alone! Just to drive this point home, the 8020 Mastiff offers you the same practical level of protection as the 7 mm Kryptonite Keeper or the 6 mm Hiplok Lite. The quiz above is new! If you have any problems with it, please send me a messageto let me know. Thanks.) Much better to get your bike covered under your house insurance or take out specialist bicycle insurance instead. OnGuard 8020 Mastiff Review Summary Firstly, because they're relatively long and flexible, you can secure your bike to a wider range of objects.
