About this deal

They include the Waterwheel plant ( Aldrovanda), the Rainbow plant ( Byblis), the Corkscrew plant ( Genlisea), and the Dewy Pine ( Drosophyllum). Our carnivorous plant compost mixture offers a Light and airy medium with excellent water absorption perfect for carnivorous plants. Most of our plants are sent out ready potted and all packed with the greatest of care to arrive with you in tip-top condition. I transplanted and separated my pitcher plant from the VFT and used the recommended soil from the same brand.

Most people are familiar with well-known carnivorous plants such as Venus flytraps, but there are lots of other beautiful types to grow, too. Hampshire Carnivorous Plants: Matt Soper offers one of the widest ranges of carnivorous plants in the UK. Grow Nepenthes x ventrata in a warm, bright room in a hanging container, ideally where it can receive a few hours of direct sun a day. However the technique for growing wetland carnivorous plants is different from how you would grow typical garden plants. Other good options include society-run seed banks, and exchanges in active carnivorous plant groups on social networks.Of course, it is fine to demonstrate the unique trapping capabilities of these plants by using a fly carefully placed with tweezers.

As avid carnivorous plant growers, we understand that salt build-up can be toxic to some forms of carnivorous plants in larger than normal quantities. Native to North America, parrot pitcher plants ( Sarracenia psittacina) have tubular leaves that lay flat along the ground, offering a welcoming hidey-hole and chemical lure for their soil-dwelling prey, which are then forced toward the digestive tract with unidirectional hairs. This gift box includes starter growing pots, compost discs, seeds and a booklet containing growing tips. Most like damp conditions and special low-nutrient compost, and can be grown indoors and sometimes outdoors.

Start with some of the easier-to-grow options, such as the Cape sundew ( Drosera capensis) or purple pitcher plant ( Sarracenia purpurea), then you can expand your collection gradually to include some that need more careful attention. I've been growing carnivorous plants for over 2 decades, having been fascinated by these plants since I got my first Venus flytrap at age 10. If you are brave enough then you will love the challenge of growing your very own carnivorous plant collection. However, unlike other garden perennials, they must be planted into compost that is specially formulated for carnivorous plants (see above), rather than soil or potting compost. The formula helps to replicate the natural growing environment of the plant whilst not contributing to the destruction of peat-bogs, where a large proportion of the world's carnivorous plants are found naturally.

Carnivorous plants are, surprisingly, not able to deal with greenfly, so use traps or biological controls to control them. Although most meat-eating plants consume insects, larger plants are capable of digesting reptiles and small mammals. This will avoid washing away the sticky muscilage of the sundews and butterworts and keep from closing the flytraps with a false alarm. If the traps on your Venus flytrap are no longer closing, it may be because curious fingers have poked at your plant too often. Small insects are immobilised by the sticky slime and larger victims may struggle to break free, coating themselves further in the mucilage - death is usually indirect, via suffocation. There are many different types, from Venus flytraps to pitcher plants, which use a range of methods to catch their prey. There is only one species - Dionaea muscipula - but dozens of weird and wonderful varieties are available.
