About this deal

Some pruner brands we tested sold new springs and blades (like Felco), but few sold or offered instructions on how to replace the garden shears.

volt Electric Cordless Pruner is an electric powered bypass pruner capable of cutting live wood up to ½” thick with the easy pull of a trigger. Its hardened steel Japanese-forged blades are rated amongst the hardest on the market and promise to offer numerous clean, sharp cuts before needing sharpening. The secateurs feel chunky but light and the ergonomic handle protects the wrist and hand, making longer pruning jobs less tiring. Adjusting the dial from one to eight closes and widens the pruners (including the handles and the blades). They can both be cleaned the Japanese way with odourless, non-oily camellia oil and also with a “ Crean Mate” – a scouring block for cleaning resin, rust and other gunks from blades. With an anvil cutting tool, you bring down a straight blade against a wide anvil usually made of steel or hard rubber.

These anvil secateurs are strong and robust with a hardened steel blade that cuts cleanly and effortlessly through thick, woody growth. They have a strong, wide cut, which also makes them easy to sharpen and clean and the handles have comfortable rubber grip inserts so they're comfortable and warm to use. However, topiary expert Lerigo says he found the latch used to open them involved too much fumbling around on ladders for his liking, a situation not helped by cold, numb or gloved hands. A simple enough purchase to make, you might think – until you start looking around and quickly learn that not all secateurs are created equal. There is a one year warranty included and we thought the secateurs were great value for money overall. This type of the tool is able to make tougher cuts gradually, as you repeatedly squeeze and release the handles to get through the growth and they are particularly useful for gardeners who lack strength. The ergonomics designed in this tool made it very comfortable to use and noticeably reduced hand fatigue.

The cutting action of this pruner is easy on the hands for repeated cuts; that’s why it is the go-to pruner for people who use them all day, every day.

The safety catch sits at the end of the handles and is chunky but easy to engage once you get used to it and they feel well balanced and feels comfortable to use. Even though it did cut very well, these design flaws made it frustrating to use at times and moved this pruner lower down on the recommendation list. We would also state that handles that fit your hands are safer because it’s less bulky and awkward when cutting branches with sharp blades. Anvil pruners, which we’ll cover further down, can crush the stem they’re cutting, so are best suited for lopping off dead branches. It’s worth cleaning this off regularly with wire wool, as well as disinfecting the blades with a weak solution of household disinfectant.
