You’ll also need to plan ahead carefully to ensure you are getting the most points out of every column you complete, timing it to complete on the right turn for bonus points and also trying to make the most of gaining extra points for columns already completed. Since you score the completed Strip and all of the completed Strips to its right, starting with the right Strips and working your way back to the left is a great strategy, but can be tricky because you will be Resting your Glazier more often. These Pane Pieces will determine which of the five colours of Pane Pieces will give bonus victory points in each of the six rounds of the game. In the coming round, she will take her turn first, but this extra tile moves her down a space on the minus-points track.

As a master artisan, you must use the finest materials to create the summer pavilion while carefully avoiding wasting supplies.

I’d highly recommend it, but I’m not sure it’s different enough from Azul that it’s worth having both.

A lot of folks are going to like that, and they may use nonsense descriptors like “gamer-y” or “thinkier” when describing it. It is also possible that a player takes more colored tiles than she can use; such excess tiles are discarded, and the player moves down the track one space per unused tile. After 3 games (a 4 player and two 2 players), I have to say that I enjoyed this version of Azul a lot more than the original. You’ll discover that its worth it to take the 6 Magenta Panes even though you only need 4 because in the moment it will score you 14 points while you will only lose up to 6 at the end of the game. You may place glass in any of the windows directly below or to the right of the glazier, moving the glazier to the window where you placed.

Because of this design and ease of play -- all while packing it in such quick decision spaces -- Azul rightfully won the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award for 2018. Players can expect to discover new unique art and components in Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra, including translucent window pane pieces, a tower to hold discarded glass panes, and double-sided player boards and window pane panels, in addition to many other beautiful components! Gameplay wise, Sintra does feel to have a bit more depth than Azul, but sometimes I do wonder if that depth is an illusion? Especially if they have a painted on theme that allows me to think for a bit that it’s not an abstract game. Adorn the windows of the Palace of Sintra with beautiful stained glass without damaging or wasting supplies in this fun, strategic game.Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra offers a different experience to the original Azul, which may be slightly more challenging and suited to experienced players. Every decision is multi-faceted, logical, and rewarding – and it’s tremendous fun to watch an opponent go reeling after you take the piece they really needed! After you lose your 18 points, your marker on that track resets to zero and you start down that path again. Azul is about making the best of a situation that becomes tighter and tighter; Sintra is about puzzling out how to capitalize on the evolving situation and not burn too many turns. Created by the world famous game designer, Michael Kiesling, Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra challenges players to compete by carefully selecting glass panes to complete their windows while being careful not to damage or waste supplies in the process.

Firstly, the player scores 1 point for each Pane Piece which matches the colour of the round track’s Pane Piece. The game was abstract enough that my mom could join in and not roll her eyes/get bogged down by the minutiae of factions and backstories, simple enough that everyone could understand how to play and, more importantly, how to play well within a few minutes. The game lasts for six rounds (a round ends when all of the tiles have been used), then players score additional points for the tiles left on their board and the full windows they’ve completed (you can score bonus points for completing windows next to each other), and lose points for any tiles a player “broke” during the game by taking more than they could use. You always have to take all the tiles of the same color, whether they’re on a factory tile or in the middle. Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra builds on the Spiel-des-Jahres-winning formula of the original, using the same basic concept but offering new strategic options. Thus, I was skeptical when I heard about Azul: Stained Glass of Sintra, but it was foolish of me to doubt all-star designer Michael Kiesling.
