Your Recon drone counts as 2 choices, but you always take it and you still have 10 other operatives to use. The first expansion to the new Kill Team system sees the Kriegsmen and Orks replaced with the Emperor’s most zealous followers, the Adepta Sororitas, and the blue-skinned advocates of the Greater Good, the T’au (or is it just Tau without the apostrophe these days?

As well as all the models in the box, Kill Team: Chalnath also comes with a full 96-page campaign book packed with background lore, Spec Ops narrative campaign rules, and nine scenarios making up the Shadow Operations: Chalnath mission pack. The scenery is impressive, even if it is the standard 40K affair of wrecked buildings and tumbledown walls, and will no doubt be featured in promo photos for other Warhammer 40,000 releases for years to come. Even your basic operatives are pretty good with their melee profile, having damage and accuracy that matches other elite combat specialists from general kill teams. With them saying they will release more of these in the future, expect this to set the pricing for their KT bundle boxes moving forward (and hopefully not more). It’s split into two operations: Track enemy – which has you using the Mark Target, Vantage, and Track Enemy Movements Tac Ops, and Institute Strike – which has you complete the “Plant Signal Beacon” Tac Op. The vast amount of diversity and unique options across the kit makes it to attaching any extras may almost seem like overkill.

Even more fun is their upgrade sprue, which houses enough parts to make 10 distinct kinds of operative, ranging from the relic-bearing Novitiate Pronatus to the Novitiate Exactor with her twin neural whips. These are pretty standard – similar to the Octarius missions they use/recommend a specific terrain layout using the box terrain, and they generally pretty good at matching the mood of what they seem to be going for. I like what Pathfinders have, but nothing in their rules is as cool as the insanely cool requisitions sisters get. Back by popular demand, the included set of Sector Imperialis terrain features a selection of walls, platforms, and pillars to hide behind, with plenty of ornate windows to shoot from. I am not a fan of being unable to build all specialists from a single Novitiate kit but at least the Pathfinders allow the opposite.

You have a wide choice of specialist operatives to select from and you cannot run all 11 in a single kill team so choosing wisely is recommended. Known as Novitiates, they are usually deployed as kill teams with an experienced Sister Superior directing their youthful zealotry. With action packed new scenarios, campaign rules, equipment and battlefields this game expansion has plenty to add to your games of Kill Team, PLUS you'll find exciting Kill Team Rules for the T'au Empire's dedicated pathfinder teams and the zealous Novitates initiates for the Adepta Sororitas faction. Of course, our brave Novitiates also have plenty of exclusive wargear they can collect on their travels. These unique rules for your models look as if they are going to be included in the Rules Manuals that come with each Kill Team expansion box.

When I first saw that there were only 7 pieces of scenery in this box, I remember thinking that it seemed a bit frugal. Octarius introduced us to an entirely new way to play Kill Team, with Narrative Play rules for Spec Ops camapigns. Wrapping up the T’au, like the Sisters, you’ve got unique rare equipment, Strategic Assests and Requistions. The standout strategic ploys for me are Bonded, which rewards you for pairing-up operatives and getting more re-rolls, and then Determined Tactician, that grants you a once-per-game second Art of War for operatives within red of your leader. Inside these 96 pages, you’ll find full rules and background for both Adepta Sororitas Novitiates and T’au Pathfinder Kill Teams, datacards (including fillable blanks to copy), equipment lists, Spec Ops rules including Rare Equipment, and nine Shadow Operations missions for use in your games of Kill Team. However, the Tau not ones to lose new land for the Greater Good, launched a heavy counterattack committing far more of their forces. Despite a relative lack of experience, Novitiates are just as accurate in shooting as their full-fledged Battle Sister comrades – but it’s in melee combat where they truly shine. Do that and you get bonus XP, bonus RP for how many dudes you set on fire, and bonus XP for operatives carrying inferno weapons. Before we wrap up this segment, for your narrative campaigns, you’ve got tables to roll or pick names for your operatives for both the T’au and Adepta Sororitas, as well as naming your Kill Team, Base of Operations, Background and Squad Quirks.
