Description

Osmo Polyx-Oil Effect is the ultimate choice for protecting and enhancing your wood surfaces. This high-quality finish is made from natural plant-based oils and waxes, making it environmentally friendly and safe to use. I live in a Victorian seaside town with a lot of old houses. One of the services I offer as a professional decorator is the renovation of old floorboards. Now old floorboards were never meant to be on show when installed and they’re often very beaten up. I quite like that though as it just adds to the character. Osmo Polyx-Oil is my product of choice for coating the floorboards up for a few reasons. The rich, deep, subtle finish has the perfect affect to suit any older house or farm cottage. The finished product seems to last for years and years. Cleaning oiled or waxed floors with a steam cleaner or steam mop introduces high temperature and pressure water which can potentially degrade or strip the oiled or waxed finish. High pressure steam can also potentially damage wooden floors. For dark and extractive-rich hardwoods (e.g. Wenge, Walnut, Jatoba etc.), we recommend using Osmo Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin.

Thank you for getting in touch. Its difficult to give a definitive answer to that without a little more information. My first thoughts would be that Polyx oil is likely to be fine for your table, however it can depend on the wood type, the preparation carried out and how the product was applied. Third Coat: Usually a third coat is not required, however highly absorbent or dry timbers may appear to require a third coat. In addition to its practical benefits, Polyx-Oil Effect is also easy to apply. It can be used on a variety of wood surfaces, including floors, doors, and furniture. Simply clean and sand the surface, apply the oil using a cloth or roller, and allow it to dry. The result is a beautiful, natural finish that will last for years to come. It seems there is a lot of confusion out there over the differences between all the Osmo products. I am asked all the time about how to choose which finish to use, and am constantly told the numbers just add to the confusion. And I totally get it. I felt the same way when first starting to use Osmo on my own projects. While I won’t be covering every single product Osmo makes, I can offer some guidance on the ones I do. I’ll try to make this as simple as possible.

Pre-order

Untreated wood in its original form has a light, pale character from its natural 'raw' appearance. Sanded wood also has the same effect. Osmo Polyx-Oil 3044 Raw is designed to retain this appearance by using a small amount of white pigments to neutralise the permanent 'wet-look' that develops after application of a clear finish. Buffing is not really something that helps with these oils, they dry hard and although they do contain some waxes or resins they do not increase much in shine when you buff them. The oil is inside the wood and so there is little for light to bounce off unlike wax that remains on the surface of the wood and is much more reflective.

Matt – Gives you a flat matt look and feel Semi Matt – A slight sheen added to the wood for those who don’t want dead matt Satin – The halfway house between matt and gloss Gloss – Gives the light a good surface to reflect off It’s always a great idea to start with the best canvas possible, sand your wood through the grits upto P120, this is a fine sand on bare timber in preparation for finishing not suitable for removing varnish or paint. Always sand with the grain of We bought enough reclaimed pine floorboards to cover the bottom floor of our (open plan) house. When choosing a product to seal it, we were recommended Osmo hardwax oil by the supplier. Occasional Maintenance: For satin sheen surfaces that have dulled slightly, refresh the surface with Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner. Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner can also help to remove stubborn shoe scuff marks for example. If the treated surface has retained colour yet there is a reduction in water repellency use Osmo Maintenance Oil. This is important to ensure the top coat remains optimal – especially in very busy areas like a door entrance for example. Osmo Maintenance Oil is thinner than regular Polyx Oil so can be used more regularly without adding too much wax and oil. Before using Osmo Maintenance Oil, damp clean the surface using diluted Osmo Wash and Care, or alternatively Osmo Spray cleaner and allow to fully dry. For small areas Osmo Maintenance Oil can be applied thinly with a lint free cloth or white pad. Remove excess product. Allow for good ventilation while drying. A small trial is highly recommended first. Osmo Polyx-Oil 3051 Raw is designed to retain an untreated appearance on light coloured woods such as Oak, Ash, Birch and Maple. Neutralises the permanent ‘wet-look’ that develops after the application of a clear oil-based finish and keeps the wood looking raw and untreated.

With any project a test area is always recommended, this can help to rule out any possible issues and help you to decide on the right colour for your wood. Osmo Top Oil does look good, but it doesn’t last, or protect your timber very well. For this reason, I tend to look at the alternatives. Polyx®-Oil Effect Raw is slightly white tinted and protects lighter coloured wood species nearly invisibly. On dark, reddish or ‘smoked / fumed’ wood species, Polyx®-Oil Effect Raw is visible as slightly white chalky surface. Applying excess Polyx®-Oil Effect Raw 3044 may also lead to a white chalky surface. Remove visible white pigments before allowing the surface to dry.A trial application is recommended. Please Note: Oiled or waxed surfaces should not be cleaned with a steam cleaner or steam mop as these will degrade or potentially strip the oiled finish. Renovation The original clear hard wax oil designed for most wooden floors & surfaces. Available in Satin, Matt, Semi-Matt and Glossy
